But press pause on \u201cSpeed Drive\u201d for just a sec to check out our roundup of five queer and trans news stories you won\u2019t want to miss (or don\u2019t! Charlie XCX and being well informed can coexist). <\/p>\n\n\n\n 1. Michigan outlawed conversion therapy for minors <\/a> A legislative win! Always worthy of celebration. On Wednesday, the state of Michigan outlawed conversion therapy<\/a> for minors. Michigan is the 22nd state to ban this scientifically discredited<\/a> and dangerous practice, which tries to \u201cconvert\u201d queer or trans folks to being straight or cis, using things like talk therapy, faith-based counselling or electroshock therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Under the new ban (a good ban for once!), any practice or treatment by a mental health professional that seeks to change an individual\u2019s sexual orientation or gender will be illegal. This doesn\u2019t include counselling or therapy aimed at providing a safe space to explore either of those topics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has a child that is LGBTQ2S+, signed the bill into law. \u201cI\u2019m grateful that today we\u2019re banning the horrific practice of conversion therapy in Michigan,\u201d she wrote on Twitter. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
