{"id":276688,"date":"2025-09-17T12:50:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T16:50:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xtramagazine.com\/?p=276688"},"modified":"2025-09-17T12:50:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T16:50:54","slug":"ai-generated-image-getty-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xtramagazine.com\/video\/ai-generated-image-getty-museum-276688","title":{"rendered":"Why is there an AI-generated image in a queer photography exhibit?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-article-kik\">The \u201cQueer Lens\u201d exhibition features \u201cChristian en el \u2018Amor de Calle,\u2019\u201d the Getty Museum\u2019s first AI-generated image<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why is there an AI-generated image in a queer photography exhibit? | Xtra Magazine\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HHOfR2cw62E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The Getty Museum is running an exhibition about the history of queer photography\u2014but one of the images is completely AI-generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in January, the Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica announced that the Getty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/the-getty-museum-acquires-its-first-ai-generated-artwork-180986081\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired its first AI image:<\/a> \u201cChristian en el \u2018Amor de Calle.\u2019\u201d The AI image was created by Mat\u00edas Sauter Morera as part of his <em>Pegamachos<\/em> series, which re-imagines stories of cowboys from the Guanacaste Coast who had sexual encounters with young gay men in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Artnet, Sauter Morera opted to use generative AI instead of a camera like he originally planned because \u201cthe pegamachos culture remains hidden\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/getty-museum-acquires-first-ai-photograph-2607554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he didn\u2019t want to expose the identities of his subjects.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inclusion of the image has caught some people off guard.
