{"id":277811,"date":"2025-11-10T16:57:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T21:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xtramagazine.com\/?p=277811"},"modified":"2025-11-10T16:57:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T21:57:12","slug":"ioc-trans-women-olympics-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xtramagazine.com\/video\/ioc-trans-women-olympics-ban-277811","title":{"rendered":"Will the IOC ban trans women from the Olympics?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-article-kik\">While reports claim a ban on trans women athletes could take shape before the Winter Games in Milan, the decision likely won\u2019t be made until next summer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Will the IOC ban trans women from the Olympics? | Xtra Magazine\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qQ4ih6J1P_8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">It\u2019s likely that the International Olympic Committee will soon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/no-decision-yet-transgender-athletes-games-eligibility-ioc-says-2025-11-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban trans women from competing in female categories at the Olympics.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 2021, the IOC urged international sport federations to create their own guidelines for the eligibility of trans athletes in lieu of having a blanket rule prohibiting trans women from competing in women\u2019s divisions. That changed when the IOC\u2019s newly appointed president Kirsty Coventry opened up new discussions about trans athletes with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/ioc-take-lead-gender-eligibility-criteria-says-coventry-2025-06-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cProtection of the Female Category\u201d working group.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, IOC\u2019s director of health, medicine and science Dr. Jane Thornton presented a review of the working group\u2019s findings, alleging that trans women have \u201cpermanent physical advantages.\u201d This is in contrast to a study from just last year which found that trans women could be at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lindseyedarvin\/2024\/04\/25\/transgender-athletes-could-be-at-a-physical-disadvantage-new-research-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">physical disadvantage compared to cis athletes.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This probing into trans athletes at the Olympics follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/fact-sheet-for-reporters-transgender-participation-in-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slew of targeted attacks on trans women and girls in competitive sports.<\/a> It also coincides with Donald Trump\u2019s executive order banning trans girls from gendered sports in schools that receive federal funding\u2014as well as his plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/05\/sport\/trump-task-force-la-olympics-spt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bar trans athletes from competing<\/a> at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-end\">While this potential new policy could take shape next year, there are still a lot of unknowns.
