With the queens paired off into reading battles this week, the winners and losers are easy to determine—but which reader is at the top of her class?

10. Hazel (last week: 5)—ELIMINATED

Tough break for Hazel, but I don’t think anyone was surviving against PM in that lip sync. Seriously, Hazel brought out a performance that would’ve kept her safe against most opponents in most other seasons, but it wasn’t even close. I don’t mind losing Hazel here—while I did enjoy her presence this season, she got plenty of chances, including the Golden Beaver a couple weeks ago. Her looks were always a bit above her performance quality in the challenges, and that kind of differential always catches up to a queen. A bummer, but the right call this week.

9. PM (last week: 9)

Holy shit, I knew they could dance, but not like that! What I was most impressed by in their lip sync was how effortless the whole thing was. Hazel was pulling out great stunts, but PM was flipping themselves all over the stage without breaking a sweat. While I don’t think it was particularly fair for PM to be in the lip sync anyway—they were actually solid in their reading battle with Sami!—I’m glad they got this opportunity to show just what a threat they are. If they can bring this kind of easy, breezy excellence to other challenges, they may just be a threat to go the distance.

8. Dulce (last week: 6)

Well, fair play to Dulce for getting the Golden Beaver. She was right to point out that the other two had both been saved once, and I liked her argument that Hazel and PM clearly had some tension to work out in the lip sync. But Dulce was absolutely deserving of a bottom two placement based on the challenge. Her digs at Velma Jones’ mom’s alcoholism were below the belt, and I wish we’d seen the judges more clearly call out why that material didn’t work. It’s not that it was personal, it’s that there was nothing funny to it, and it was punching at something Velma had no control over. Additionally, Dulce had the worst runway of the week in my book—nothing about it said “erosion.” I’ve been rooting for Dulce this season, but after this week, I would’ve been fine seeing her be the one eliminated.

7. Van Goth (last week: 1)

Honestly, a pretty disappointing performance from Van this week. I thought the judges went a bit easy on her in critiques, and I personally would not have saved her from the bottom three. (I would’ve saved PM and Mya.) It felt like Van spent more of her time reading herself than Saltina Shaker in their battle, and while there’s an argument to be made that she was trying to neutralize Saltina’s likely material … that didn’t work, since Saltina’s jokes still all landed. If I had to make an argument for Van’s safety, I would chalk it up to her skull reveal runway look, which was genuinely one of the best of the week. But I’d like to see how Van would perform under a bit more pressure, and this episode offered a natural opportunity for that. A shame the judges didn’t take it!

6. Mya Foxx (last week: 2)

Mya was the best of the losers this week, handling her matchup with the maxi-challenge winner like a champ and walking away with her head held high. It wasn’t close, no, but the baseline between the two was just so much higher. Mya as a loser was better than at least one of the battle winners, if not more. I also loved her take on an eruption on the runway, although I liked the makeup and smoke effect more than the garment itself. Still, Mya is proving to be more of a threat than I thought she’d be at the start of this season. In a weaker cast—Season 5’s, for instance—I think she’d be a lock for the endgame. As it stands, I still think she has a shot, but she’s got some titans standing in her way.

5. Karamilk (last week: 10)

She seemed annoyed when Hazel picked her, but Karamilk actually got the best possible opponent. Hazel spent most of their battle fumbling over her own jokes and giving Karamilk opportunities to clap back. Karamilk’s prepared material was worse by comparison than her comebacks, though I did laugh at the “Hazel without her K: ketamine” joke. Basically, Karamilk did better than the worst of the crop, and for that, she lands on the top half of this power ranking. I do desperately need her to up her game on the runways, though. Her take on “melting” being a melted chocolate bar bra and panty felt decidedly underwhelming in what was otherwise a very strong runway presentation by this cast.

4. Sami Landri (last week: 7)

Finally, Sami shows us what she’s capable of! Both on the runway in a gorgeous crystallization look and in the challenge, Sami demonstrated that she’s been listening to the judges, and she’s ready to take bigger swings. She came up with a very funny conceit for the reading battle, riffing on PM’s name for various jokes: “pussy milk,” “poorly made,” “problematic mug,” “patchy mullet,” “poop muncher.” Stop, stop, they’re already dead! Most impressively, Sami did a great job at taking PM’s jokes about her in stride—it made her very endearing in her performance. Really great work from Sami, and the first sign that she’s got what it takes to live up to her reputation. (Congrats on the mini-challenge win, too!)

3. Velma Jones (last week: 8)

Okay, that’s more like it from Velma. Yes, her performance in the reading battle was great—“Dulce is from the city of London, and now I know where she got her British smile” had me howling. And the use of a pause after “Dulce is so poor” to basically score a two-for-one joke? Really great stuff. But I was most impressed with Velma on the runway this week. Her precipitation look was one of those that actually takes you a second to process what you’re looking at. Brooke Lynn Hytes and her judges seemed bowled over by it, as was I: the smoke effect, her mug and the separate trains on each of her legs just made the whole thing feel ethereal and unexpected. Velma’s a real threat for the crown; she just needs to avoid another hiccup like we saw in Snatch Game, because this cast is not going to miss the chance to take her out again.

2. Saltina Shaker (last week: 3)

You know what? Saltina’s got the goods! I was skeptical of her coming into this season as a TikTok queen, and her initial nervousness didn’t do much to assuage my concerns. But since her maxi-challenge win, Saltina has settled into herself, and is now killing it week in and week out. She was terrific in her battle with Van, easily handling the frontrunner and getting some of the biggest laughs of the episode. Like Brooke Lynn, I will be thinking about “All right, hi, ladies and gentlemen, whatever the fuck PM is” for the rest of the season. On the runway, I’ll admit I liked Saltina’s concept more than her execution—it really was just a jumpsuit, and the hair and makeup did a lot to sell it. But still, that’s a minor issue considering what a roll Saltina is on right now. She’s really surprised me, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

1. Eboni La’Belle (last week: 4)

TKO. My god, Eboni really delivered this week—and at just the right time. I was beginning to worry she was a bigger character than competitor, but she shut me right up. Her beauty salon take on a combustion look was fun, creative and had a great surprise reveal. But most impressive was how Eboni just demolished Mya in the reading battle, and Mya put up a fight! I snort-laughed at calling Mya “ugly brother,” but the best line was one of her longest: “Did y’all know she’s a lyricist and also a liar? In her verse on Episode 1, she said she ‘serves looks in her free time.’ I guess she don’t got a lot of free time, bitch!” Unbelievable work from Eboni: a clear victory and her real coming out moment in the competition. I would welcome her to the big leagues, but it’s clear Eboni has been there all along—she just took a minute to warm up.

[8,6,10
2459
114

50
58
33
2536
