{"id":30470,"date":"2009-08-26T06:54:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-26T03:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xtramagazine.com\/is-sex-overrated-30470"},"modified":"2020-12-09T17:13:25","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T22:13:25","slug":"is-sex-overrated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xtramagazine.com\/love-sex\/is-sex-overrated-30470","title":{"rendered":"Is sex overrated?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nA growing &#8216;asexual pride&#8217; movement seems to think so, as the whoopie-adjacent are now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/c\/a\/2009\/08\/24\/MNC6194GN4.DTL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demanding society stop discriminating against them<\/a> for, umm, what they&#8217;re not doing.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBut when I see today how gay sexuality is being used as <a href=\"http:\/\/ausiellofiles.ew.com\/2009\/08\/25\/gossip-girl-exclusive-chuck-bass-goes-gay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a cheap ratings stunt for &#8216;Gossip Girl&#8217;<\/a> (hey, <a href=\"http:\/\/current.com\/items\/90732681_thats-gay-lady-kisses.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gay guys are the new lesbians<\/a>!), I can see how the asexuals do have a point.  We all know that sex is mostly just used to sell stuff, like with this cheesy clip of &#8220;Twilight: New Moon&#8221; actor <strong>Alex Meraz<\/strong> making the rounds on the internet:\n<\/p>\n<p classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\" width=\"450\" height=\"295\">\n\t<param name=\"width\" value=\"450\">\n\t<param name=\"height\" value=\"295\">\n\t<param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\">\n\t<param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\">\n\t<param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/8BH1HHGTCTs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x402061&amp;color2=0x9461ca\">\n\t<embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"450\" height=\"295\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/8BH1HHGTCTs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x402061&amp;color2=0x9461ca\"><\/embed><\/p>\n<p>\n<em>I am not seeing that movie<\/em> and I don&#8217;t care how many shirtless boys they throw at us to make us!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThen, of course, there&#8217;s the serious part &#8212; the harrowing news of one new study from the US that <span><span>says gay men and<br \/>\nother men who have sex with men <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhrealitycheck.org\/blog\/2009\/08\/24\/cdc-finally-makes-it-official-gay-and-bi-men-50-times-more-likely-contract-hiv-than-other-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contract AIDS at a rate more than 50<br \/>\ntimes greater<\/a> than women and non-gay\/bi men (condoms, people, condoms!!) and <\/span><\/span>another finding that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctv.ca\/servlet\/ArticleNews\/story\/CTVNews\/20090826\/circum_aids_090826\/20090826?hub=Health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">circumcision is not the defense against HIV<\/a> some have believed.  On the bright side, I guess I can cancel that surgery appointment!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEven dating can be a nightmare (<a href=\"http:\/\/melodymaker.posterous.com\/the-reason-some-girls-stay-single-very-funny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hearing <em>this<\/em>, I&#8217;m so glad I&#8217;m not a single straight girl!<\/a>) and one starts to wonder if <a href=\"http:\/\/jugomag.com\/celebrities\/penelope-cruzs-platonic-love\/1235117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Penelope Cruz<\/strong> and <strong>Pedro Almodovar<\/strong> have the right idea<\/a>.  Can you really party without sex?
